I witnessed Joe Carter’s historic home run in 1993. The memories just came flooding back
I will never forget what went through my mind 32 years and four days ago.
Things were looking so good for the Toronto Blue Jays. Up three games to two in the 1993 World Series, at home in the place we then called the SkyDome, with a chance to win a second consecutive baseball championship — an extraordinary feat.
The Jays were leading 5-1 after six innings. Their starting pitcher, Dave Stewart, seemed totally in control and built for moments such as these. He was a 36-year-old veteran who’d been in this spot before with the Oakland A’s and won a World Series. There was no one else you’d rather have on the mound at that moment.
And then it began to fall apart. Stewart ran out of postseason magic, and the Philadelphia Phillies scored five times in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.
